Osteo, Physio or Chiro for my pain?

Osteo, Physio or Chiro for my pain?

We often hear from many people who are confused about which type of treatment is best for them.  Most people think their first port of call following an injury has to be a Physio…but that’s not necessarily the case. Physios, Chiros and Osteos are all primary health care practitioners qualified to diagnose, refer for imaging (x-ray and ultrasound) or specialist care, treat injuries and rehabilitate.  We are all ACC registered with no Dr’s referral required!

So how do you know which one is best for you?  As always, it’s a personal preference and you may already have a therapist you trust and have fantastic results with – in which case, stick with them.  If you’re not really sure what the difference is, here’s my observations from years of working with and teaching the different practitioners.

Physiotherapists
Physio’s are fantastic at diagnosing and providing exercise description.  Their training is designed to get you moving through exercise, with minimal emphasis on hands on treatment.

Chiropractors
Chiro’s focus on dysfunctions resulting from the misalignment of the spine.  Treatments are typically 10-15 mins long (some people love short sessions!) and may involve an X-ray, manipulation and some soft tissue release.

Osteopaths
What drew me to Osteopathy is that it encompasses both modalities but with much longer session or treatment times  As an Osteopath, I am able to make your sore bits hurt less through manipulation, articulation and  / or soft tissue release, establish what caused it in the first place so hopefully it doesn’t happen again, and prescribe you some realistic home care.
During a recent chat with a leading NZ healthcare practitioner - whom I best not name (but who have just launched some pretty awesome collagen powder!) -  they commented “why would I go to a Chiro or Physio, when I could see an Osteo and have the best of both”.  Couldn’t have said it better myself!

That being said, every practitioner works uniquely, despite their training.  Some physios love hands on treatment, some chiros don’t manipulate and some osteopaths believe in cranial-sacral therapy….don’t get me started, that’s for another blog 😊

Personally, I have a referral list of physios and chiros that are at the top of their game, and frequently work with patients existing practitioners, if that’s best for them.  At the end of the day, all any good therapist wants is for you to feel better, so if that sounds like it aligns with you and you want to know more about how we can help you?  Book a time with us.  If it’s your first osteopathic treatment with us, refer to this newsletter and we’ll take $20 off your first treatment with us.  Pretty good deal huh!  We look forward to seeing you in the clinic. 😊

Because Birthdays Are About Epic Free Stuff!
We are so excited to be celebrating 10 years in practice and wanted to invite you to the party by giving away amazing prizes everyday for a week – starting this Monday! A huge thank you to our suppliers for coming to the party and providing some awesome packages for you guys. We can’t wait to celebrate with you.
Details on how to win will be posted on our Facebook page daily – so head on over, like our page and get ready to enter ?
Following on from last month’s tips on Winter Wellness, we thought we’d add a couple more of our favourite tips on how to stay well:

Clear The Air

Grab a bottle of eucalyptus oil (cheap and cheerful from the supermarket), or good old Vicks – add some to a bowl of boiling water (out of reach of children) and let it permeate into the air. This is great to keeping rooms bug free!

Natures Magic

Nature is amazing how it provides us with exactly what we need each season. Lemon season is here and we love them! Warm water and lemon juice in the morning not only kick starts your metabolism but boosts your Vitamin C needed for fighting off colds and soothes any niggle throats. Delish!

The Vital Body guarantee

We’re so confident in our approach that we provide a guarantee.

"If we can’t see progress after four treatment sessions, we will refer you to another specialist from our trusted network of allied health professionals."
There’s no caveat to our guarantee. Sure, every body is different but as experienced professionals, we expect to see signs of change early on. If we don’t; we take it upon ourselves to find you an alternate treatment provider who will be able to help.

Friday's Food Fix - Paleo Banana Pikelets

7/4/2017

Picture
This is an oldie, but a goodie, and soo easy!  An awesome ‘sometime’ breakfast.   This usually makes enough for two breakfasts for me.  All you need is:

  • 1 free range egg
  • 1 tbsp of almond butter
  • 1 banana

Blitz it together and fry in coconut oil...and that’s it!  While my pikelets are cooking I put about a cup of frozen berries in a pot with a blob of coconut cream, and let it reduce to my version of a coulis.  They magically seem to be ready at the same time.

Serve pikelets with berry coulis, a sprinkle of LSA if you like it, and a dollop of coconut cream.  Yum!!

Tuesday Tip - Benefits of Lymphatic Massage

4/4/2017

Picture
Many of you have experienced the power of this specialised style of massage before from one of our therapists, but with coughs and colds doing the rounds I thought it was a great time to talk about what lymphatic massage is and how it can help you.

What is it?
I like to think of the lymphatic system as the housemaid of the body - it plays a vital role in cleaning up and supporting your immune system, transporting some fats to their right location and ensuring good fluid balance throughout your body.  Working normally, it ticks along in the background but when it hasn't been cleaned for a while, you can start to to feel puffy and sluggish, and you may be more susceptible to cough and colds.  Lymphatic massage helps to manually push the lymphatic fluid though your body and stimulates a good spring clean.

How Can Lymphatic Massage Help?
  • Boost your immune system after colds, periods of stress or poor eating
  • Prepare your body for surgery and support recovery post surgery
  • Assist in management of allergies and hay-fever
  • Promote sinus drainage
  • Reduce swelling often experienced with pregnancy
  • Assist with chronic conditions such as Chron's, IBS, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue

If you think you would benefit from this treatment book yourself in for this deeply relaxing, powerful treatment or give us a call and we can talk to you about your specific needs.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

3/4/2017

Picture
Around this time of year it’s common for me to incorporate some gentle manual lymphatic drainage into treatments. Think of your lymphatic system as the maid you wish you had ;-)  It contains infection fighting white blood cells that aid in cleaning your body of toxins, waste and inflammation.
Research shows us that it stimulates the immune response, helping reduce the likelihood of catching a cold and driving out residual symptoms post colds and flu. But it does so much more than that! We know it’s effective at reducing swelling post-surgery and injuries, decreasing stress, regeneration of tissues, and an awesome detoxifier that helps minimise headaches, digestive problems, allergies and fatigue.

If this sounds like something your body needs, pop in to see us and let’s get your better faster!

Stretching is good for you...

Picture
Let’s face it we all hate doing the stretches and exercises we are given at the end of treatment (myself included) and the reality is, most of us do them a couple of times with the best of intentions then loose motivation. The last thing you feel like doing at the end of a long day is your ‘homework’. BUT they are massively important. As therapists, there is a lot we can change in a session but it’s what you do every day in between that really has the power to create lasting change and maximise the benefit of your treatment.

Jaw Pain

6/3/2017

Picture
I’m not going to bore you with all the anatomy of the face and jaw, but here are some key structures that are useful to know:
  • The jaw joint (called the temporal mandibular joint or TMJ).  This is the part that can click, pop and lock on some people.
  • The powerhouse muscle known as your masseter.  This sits outside the mouth along your jaw bone.  You’ll feel this pop out when you clench your teeth, because that’s its key job when chewing.  If you clench your jaw regularly, this is the guy that will need some attention and is frequently associated with chronic headaches.
  • Little muscles just inside your mouth called you pterygoids.  These deviate your jaw from one side to the other and get very unhappy on people who grind their teeth.  If you’re not sure if you do, ask your partner…apparently it’s very loud at night!

Shin Pain

There are many contributors to shin pain, and a good practitioner will consider them all before commencing treatment. Typically in runners it’s the result of a sudden increase in training, a change of training surfaces or shoes. This can cause or highlight impaired calf muscle function, poor movement of the hip, knee, ankles joints and pronated feet.

Connective Tissue / Myofascial Release

20/2/2017

Picture
Connective tissue is a complex structure that surrounds pretty much every tissue of the body – from nerves to muscles and everything in between. It’s vital for providing form to the body as well as assisting in the delivery of nutrients and fluids. The best way to understand it is to look at your common sausage…our muscles are represented by the sausage meat (muschy), the connective tissue is the white casing around it (giving it shape).

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is the most frequent condition I treat in the clinic, unsurprisingly with most of us experiencing it at some point in our lives. There are many causes of lower back pain including disc, ligament, muscles, nerve and joint disruption. It is important to differentiate what is causing your back pain to establish the treatment appropriate for you. Your therapist will consider all of these by asking appropriate questions and doing relevant tests.

We’ve all heard the experts tell us that most of us should be getting more sleep but we live busy lives and we need those extra hours up to finish deadlines or catch up with chores, it makes us more productive right? Answer is not at all…and to make matters worse, our lack of sleep contributes to weight gain. You know I’m all about keeping the message simple, so here’s what you need to know:

Should You Be Rolling Your IT Band?

13/2/2017

Picture
I'm not saying don't do it, but it's just not as effective as we are lead to believe and there are way more effective ways to release it (and less painful!)
Here's what we know about the ITB
  • It's connective tissue so has very little contractile properties (hence painfully rolling on it is not going to make much difference in it's length anyway)
  • It's designed to have some tension to support your lateral quads and hamstrings, so stop trying to make it loose!
How do you stretch it?
I like to think of the ITB as guitar string which is controlled by the tuning pegs at the top. ITB tension is controlled by the glute max and TFL (shown below). So if you want to stretch it, grab a rubber ball and start rolling in those muscles. Way more effective and kinder!

If you’ve had a significant injury always seek medical advice.  In the interim, it’s standard practice to care for your injury using rest, ice, compression and elevation.  The sooner you can do this the better.

Vitality Tips - Foot Massage

31/1/2017

Picture
I love this little trick and it shows you what effect connective tissue has the whole body. Before you do this, try and touch your toes and make note of how far you can go. Next grab yourself a golf ball (the perfect size to fit under your feet) and massage the bottom of your feet by rolling your feet over the golf ball. This is easy to do while seated at your desk. Now try and touch your toes again. You should be able to go a lot further. Cool aye! And it’s great for tight calves and Plantar Fasciitis.

Most of us have experienced lower back pain at some stage in our lives.  In the clinic, we see a lot of extended lower backs (commonly called a sway back - though this is technically not the case), which is painful with long periods of standing or lying on your tummy.
